Guidance and Adventure
At Gerald Tan, we help young people discover who they are and what they can become. Our mission is to guide youth through life’s challenges by offering safe spaces, mentoring, and the freedom to explore their unique paths — even when society pushes them in other directions.
This purpose is rooted in my own story. I started fishing when I was nine, saving fifty cents of pocket money to plan five-dollar trips that covered bus fare, pond fees, food, and bait. My first rod and reel were simple, but the real lesson was patience. Over the years, I chased exotic fishing trips and bought more gear than I could ever use. Today, I walk reservoir banks with just a simple pole rod, grateful for any bite. Fishing taught me that perseverance and knowing when enough is enough matter more than having more stuff.
Golf found me later in life. I worked at golf clubs but never played until injuries forced me to give up running and football. I took up golf with my partner and discovered its humbling nature. I thought fancy clubs would fix my swing — they didn’t. If I could do it again, I’d start earlier and practice more.
Both hobbies taught me that shortcuts don’t build skill — commitment does. This is the spirit we bring to youth at Gerald Tan. We mentor, guide, and support them to grow with patience and courage. We help them believe that their future is theirs to shape — step by step, swing by swing.
